PRE-LOVED GEAR

The equipment needed to participate in artistic roller skating changes as people progress through the sport. The beginner who is learning the basics needs nothing more than comfortable clothing and a pair of socks as skates can be hired at the rink. At DIGI, our home rink, the cost of hiring skates is included in the cost of the Star Class.

As the skater progresses to competition and private lessons with a commisioned coach, more specialised skates are required. Basic beginner's artistic skates are available and there are often pre-loved skates for sale as children grow and/or require more advanced equipment. As in any sport, when skaters achieve the skill to participate in higher levels of national and international competition, there are a variety of boots, plates, wheels and stoppers available to enable them to perform at the high level they have worked and trained to achieve.

When competing, skaters wear costumes appropriate to the event they are in. The costumes must also conform to the requirements set down by skating's governing body. There is, however, ample opportunity for the creation of imaginative and original costumes that reflect the tempo and mood of the music used in dance, freestyle and precision events. It is common to see the mothers of skaters sitting around rinks adding sequins and other embellishments to costumes as their children train for upcoming competitions.

A number of mothers become so proficient at creating and sewing costumes that skaters and their parents pay them to make their costumes. This arrangement benefits everyone as skaters have access to someone who is skilled and experienced in costume creation and it serves as a form of fund raising for those doing the work.

SECOND HAND EQUIPMENT

The club has a register of second hand skating equipment to facilitate the sale of used gear. People wishing to sell skates and accessories they no longer need can list their gear so that others know what is available. Every second Saturday, usually, new and used leotards and costumes, as well as skates and other accessories, are displayed at the rink for anyone to buy.

Remember, it is important for skaters to confer with their coach, as the coach will be able to provide expert advice on the skating equipment necessary.
This recycling of used items makes it easier for parents of up and coming skaters to keep their children supplied with the gear that they need.
